Fire-weather modelling

The aim of this project is to better understand the dynamics of how fires spread and to couple a physically-based model of a fire to a mesoscale numerical weather prediction model. This work is joint with Terry Clark (NCAR) and Morwenna Griffiths.

Gravity wave sources over the Southern Ocean

I have been examining sources of inertia-gravity waves over the Southern Ocean in collaboration with Fiona Guest. The project focuses on analysing waves in radiosonde soundings taken at Macquarie Island, and using ray tracing to determine their source.

Gravity wave generation by convection

Todd Lane (NCAR), Terry Clark (NCAR) and I have been examining how deep tropical convection generates gravity waves in a three-dimensional numerical model.

Madden-Julian oscillation

Joe Zehnder and I have recently started an investigation of the Madden-Julian oscillation using a three-layer model with highly simplified treatments of radiation, convection and surface processes.

Tropical cloud lines

Robert Goler (a graduate student) and I have been examining the formation of northeasterly morning glories, and the initiation and organising the North Australian cloud line.
