Thank you for your enquiry about graduate study at Monash University. The School of Mathematical Sciences offers MSc and PhD degrees by research thesis.
The first step is to determine whether or not you have the qualifications for entry into the graduate program. The main requirement is that you have at least an upper second-class honours degree in Mathematics or the equivalent. (An Australian honours degree takes 4 years, and upper second-class is roughly equivalent to a B average.) To determine precisely whether your qualifications are equivalent, we need to see your academic transcripts. We can do this when you submit an application.
If you don't have an upper second-class degree (or better), you may be permitted to enrol for honours or for the MSc Part 1, which would normally take one year of study. After successfully completing the MSc Part 1, you may enrol in the MSc or PhD program.
If your first language is not English you must satisfy the university's English language requirements. These requirements may be met by performing satisfactorily in such English language tests as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). (see http://www.monash.edu.au/international/englishrequirement/)
The second step in applying for admission to the graduate program is for us to find out your research interests and to determine whether or not we have a member of staff in a position to supervise you.
The final step is for you to make an application for admission. You can find out more about enrolling in a higher degree at http://www.sci.monash.edu.au/postgrad/index.html Applications for admission to the program may be made at any time. If you wish to apply for a graduate program, the MSc application form and the PhD application form can be downloaded from http://www.sci.monash.edu.au/postgrad/index.html or http://www.monash.edu.au/international/courses/
The completed application, together with a curriculum vitae, an outline of the proposed program of study, certified copies of your academic transcripts, (and evidence of English proficiency if needed), should be mailed to:
Monash International
Monash University
PO Box 73
Victoria, 3800
Australia
e-mail: study@monash.edu
The application form requires a short (about 200 word) description of your proposed area of study. Once we determine which member of staff could supervise you, he/she can help you with the project description. This doesn't necessarily lock you into that particular topic; you still have the flexibility to change topics later. But writing the short description indicates that you've investigated the research possibilities, and that we have something you're interested in and someone capable of supervising you. You will be required to develop a more detailed research proposal once you start.
Once accepted. research students usually commence their studies at the start of the first semester in late February each year, although they may enrol at any time during the year. International students must study full-time as part-time study is not permitted on a student visa. The PhD degree normally takes three years, although the maximum period of candidature is four years. The MSc by research normally takes 2 years of study.
Non-residents are normally required to pay for their tuition. For more information on fees, see http://www.monash.edu/international/fees/ . Financial support for some overseas applicants is available through the AusAid program, applications for which must be made through the nearest Australian Embassy. Awardees have their academic fees, health insurance and travel to and from Australia paid, receive a relocation allowance and fortnightly stipend, and are entitled to tutorial assistance. More information can be found at http://www.ausaid.gov.au/ Exceptionally strong overseas candidates may apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS). Approximately 60 IPRS are offered at Monash each year to students from all overseas countries (except New Zealand) and cover the cost of course fees for international students. If you apply for an IPRS you can also apply for a Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS) to cover your living expenses. Scholarships are awarded once per year and completed application forms must be lodged by 31 October.
